How Fear Contributes to Abortion, (and the key to fighting back)

One of the most common, if not the most common, phrases in the bible is “fear not.” (I have included the phrases “be not afraid” or “do not fear” in a lump with “fear not”.) God is exceedingly clear to us all. We should not give in to fear in our daily lives, even when we are confronted with some really big and really scary circumstances.

When I experienced my abortion, the driving factor for making my decision was fear. No matter where I turned, I was confronted with extreme fear and anxiety. I was afraid to tell those I loved and cared about that I was pregnant for fear of judgement. I was afraid that my future would be drastically altered and I would not be able to live the life I was planning if I had a child. I was afraid that my pregnancy would ruin the life of my then boyfriend. I was told by Planned Parenthood employees that time was of the essence, causing fear and urgency. A decision made quickly and in fear is not a decision well thought out or made with a clear head.

Ultimately, fear stole my child from me.

In society, we have created a culture of fear. A culture that breeds and bends to fear. Fear is a manipulator, one that supports the abortion industry. Pregnant women are told many lies in order to breed fear, anxiety, and a quick decision to end a pregnancy.

How many of the lies have you been told? You may have heard “Teen moms wont be able to go to college.” “You won’t be able to compete in sports if you are pregnant.” “You can kiss your promotion goodbye.” “Men won’t marry you if you are a single mom.” “Single mothers are sinners.” “You won’t be able to afford a child.” “It’s better to abort your child then raise him without a father.” “Your child will be a burden.”

The list goes on and on and on.

How do we as people of Christ, and advocates for life fight back against this culture of fear that steals children away from women?

First John: 4:18 says “There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear.” And 2 Timothy 1:7 says “For God did not give us a spirit of fear, but of power and love and self control.”

It is very clear that the key to fighting fear is love.

Love is how we fight the culture of fear that is contributing to the devastation of abortion. What is love?

1 Corinthians 13: 4-8 says “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.  It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.  Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.  It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.”

As Christians, we must always interact with abortion minded women (and men) with love, and we must combat fear with love.

With patience, kindness, selflessness and truth. Without becoming angry, without keeping a record of wrongs. Protecting, trusting, hoping, and persevering. With perfect love, fear is cast out.

Go into the battle field with love, my friends, and fear not.
